I was asked to give an existing security group permissions to a new mail enabled public folder in exchange 2010. After searching for the right group in the GUI of Exchange 2010 I noticed that couldn’t find the right group.

There are 2 reasons for this:

  1. The security group must be universal
  2. The group must be mail enabled

The first action can be done by via “Active Directory Users and Computers”. Right click on the right group and edit the properties.


The second action can only be done with a PowerShell command.


Open the Exchange Management Shell and execute the follwing command:

Enable-DistributionGroup -Identity "Group-Name"


After this you will be able to add the group to the public folder and give it permissions.
